For Robert Rivas, the wake-up call came five years ago, when he learned at a meeting of educators and civic leaders that more than half of North County’s Latino boys were dropping out of high school.

A local effort to help reverse the trend of low educational achievement among Latino boys entered its second year Saturday at Cal State San Marcos. About three dozen Latino teens from around North County gathered with their parents in a classroom for an orientation session for Encuentros, a program founded by North County educational and Latino leaders last year.
