Business and civic leaders from around North County gathered at MiraCosta College on Wednesday to hear news of what some call a disturbing trend.
“The education pipeline is leaking Latino males,” said Mark Evilsizer a member of the Palomar College board of trustees and secretary of the Encuentros Leadership program. “There are an excessive amount dropping out——starting at middle school all the way through college.”

Helping Latino boys succeed in the classroom and in life will be the focus of a discussion hosted by the Encuentros Leadership of North County on April 15 in Oceanside.
About 140 local government, education and business leaders are expected to attend the event, said Robert Rivas, founder of the Encuentros group, whose name comes from the Spanish word for “coming together.”

What are forty Hispanic boys between the ages of 11 and 14 doing at 7 o’clock in the morning? It’s not easy to guess, but in North San Diego County we can bear witness that they are fighting. Although they are not fighting one another, they are battling for an adequate education in order to graduate from the university one day.
