On Saturday, October 5th ten of our male students in grades 6/7/8 participated in the Encuentros Leadership Conference at MiraCosta College with Ms. Camacho and Ms. Salvino. What a powerful experience for our 6/7/8 boys who participated in this event. Encuentros is a college event geared toward young men of Hispanic decent regarding opportunities related to higher education.
The Encuentros Leadership Conference primary focus is on guiding and motivating young men to finish high school and to attend college to open their opportunities for their future. On this day, students met many prominent professionals and gathered information by attending workshops on possible careers they would like to pursue in the future.
This week’s quote “Life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% how I react,” was quoted by the guest speaker Frank Guzman. Mr. Guzman is an attorney in Northern California, however in his inspirational talk to our youth, noted that he was on the wrong path of life. He was expelled in his school and in and out of prison, looking at life with anger and dismay. Then he realized the power within him and given his weaknesses, turned them into strengths such as his love to argue, which he is now an attorney. Oftentimes, when viewing on life we need to embrace our weaknesses and see how they can be strengths. Also we need to embrace our youth and with much patience, show them the path to a better future rather than settling. The power of belief, having others believe in you and believe in yourself as well as the perception of oneself can make a difference in one’s life.
